NEWS AND NOTES:

NHL:

The Oilers sign F Taylor Hall (27 goals, 26 assists in 2012) to a 7-yr extension worth an average of $6 mil per season

MLB:

Mets Pitcher Johan Santana (6-9, 4.85 ERA) has been put back on the DL due to back inflammation.  He will likely miss the remainder of the season.  What a shame that is for both Santana and the Mets.  Johan was able to come back after missing parts of 2 seasons and pitch the first no-hitter in Met franchise history, only to once again find himself on the DL and another lost season.

Oakland A's right hander Bartolo Colon will also miss the remainder of the season, but for much different circumstances.  He has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for Testosterone, becoming the second player in less then 2 weeks who was caught cheating.  At least Colon did not have a friend create a phony web site and claim he bought a cream on the Internet that he did not know contained Testosterone.

But, I told many of my friends who are unfortunately NY Yankee fans that Colon was taking something last year, when he went out of the country to some Dr. Feelgood and was able to pitch so well last season with NY.  There ya go!

Today Team USA defeated Spain 107-100 to win a second consecutive Gold Medal in Basketball.  And LeBron James joined Michael Jordan, as the only other basketball player to win an MVP Award, the NBA Championship and an Olympic Gold Medal within the same year.

That is awesome, but I got one a bit better.  There are only 7 men in American Basketball history to have won an NCAA Championship, an NBA Championship and an Olympic Gold Medal in their careers.

Four of them are, Clyde Lovellette, K.C. Jones, Jerry Lucas and Quinn Buckner.  BUT three others have also won an MVP Award in the Regular Season and in the NBA Finals.  They are:  Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Bill Russell.

Lovellette went to Kansas, Jones and Russell went to the University of San Francisco (back to back winners in 1955 and 1956), Lucas at Ohio State, Buckner at Indiana, Jordan at North Carolina and Johnson at Michigan State.

Since Kobe Bryant and LeBron James did not attend college, they can not join this exclusive club.

You can add Florida State to the list of Universities that get it and do things the right way. As they have thrown CB Greg Reid off the football team for being arrested in July on multiple misdemeanor charges.

The Seminoles, like Notre Dame, are showing that ethics and morals come before football and winning.I salute both bastions of higher learning.

The Trading Deadline for the 2012 MLB Season has passed, but there were many last minute deals made.  Some were surprises and some were not, but all can help for the buyers this year, maybe for the sellers, down the road a piece.

7/30/12

Trailing 4-2, the Mets score 4 in the 8th to take a 6-4 lead only to see Bobby Parnell give it back in the bottom of the 9th, as the Giants score 2 to tie.  It almost ended there, but Rookie southpaw Josh Edgin struck out Marco Scutaro looking on a 3-2 heater right down the middle of the plate.

Scott Hairston, who homered off of Romo in the Met uprising in the 8th, homered again in the 10th, this time off of Santiago Casilla.  The Mets tacked on an insurance run to lead 8-6 as they entered the bottom of the 10th.

Manny Acosta pitched the 10th, gave up 1 run and with the tying run on second and the winning run on first, got Brandon Belt on a drive to center field that was caught one step from the fence by Jordany Valdespin.  Valdespin had come into the game as a pinch hitter for Andres Torres in the 8th inning and replaced him in CF as well.

Josh Edgin picked up his first Major League victory and Manny Acosta his first save of the season, as the Mets rally and then hold on to win the game 8-7.

A very exciting one here in Frisco, as the Mets open a 4 game series with the Giants.
